USB 3.0!! IS IT WORTH??

It has been some times since USB 3.0 was launched into the market. As we all know USB 3.0 is the next major version of universal serial bus devices. In this article I will be dealing with the question that arises in a lot of minds, “Is USB 3.0 Really worth It?” Should I go for it or is my old USB drive enough to do all the works?

Let’s start with the benefits of USB 3.0.

Pros:-

·         It has an extremely fast write speed. It can write 10x faster than USB 2.0.
·         It introduces full duplex data transfer which means it can read and write data simultaneously at full speeds. This is one feature which is not available in previous versions.
·         It is backwards compatible which means whether you get a new USB 3.0 device or a new computer that supports USB 3.0, your old device will be able to communicate with the new interface. Naturally, it will do so at the old USB 2.0 speeds.
·         It has extremely fast transfer speeds which mean you can transfer a 5 GB file in approximately 12 seconds.
·         Most of the operating system such as Windows 7, Linux etc. support USB 3.0
·         USB 3.0 is lot more power efficient than USB 2.0. It uses much less power as compared to USB 2.0

Now let’s talk about some of the drawbacks that USB 3.0 has.

Cons:-

·         It is very costly. A 16 Gigabytes of USB thumb drive costs $90 which is around 4600 INR. USB 2.0 drives are relatively a lot cheaper than USB 3.0 drives.
·         USB 3.0 is incompatible with USB 1.1
·         USB 3.0 supports maximum cable length of 3 meters as compared to 5 meters of USB 2.0
·         All motherboards do not support USB 3.0 There is still a limited number of motherboards which support USB 3.0
·         If your motherboard does not support USB 3.0, then you can only get USB 2.0 transfer speeds with a USB 3.0 drive.

As we saw above the major benefit of USB 3.0  is transfer speeds. It has enormously fast data transfer speeds. On paper USB 2.0 claims maximum data transfer speeds as 482 MBPS whereas USB 3.0 claims maximum speeds upto 5 GBPS, which is 10 times more than USB 2.0. On the other hand USB 3.0 drives are very costly as compared to USB 2.0 devices. Also USB 3.0 device are incompatible with USB 1.1 devices so old motherboards will be out of race. The motherboards which support USB 3.0 are very costly. These are generally high end motherboards. If you are a system administrator and plan to install operating systems using your USB thumb drive, then USB 3.0 is for you. It makes the installation of any operating system 5 times faster(Based on my own experience).
So to sum it up if you are an average user and do simple file copying tasks there is not much need of
Investing huge amount for these devices since USB 2.0 devices have enough speeds for performing daily tasks. But if you are an advanced user and perform a lot of file related tasks, USB 3.0 is for you. It will really make your work easier and faster than ever before.
